NEW DELHI, May 28 (Xinhua) -- A newly-elected legislator died in a road mishap in India's southern state of Karnataka early Monday morning, reported the Zee News TV channel.
The deceased legislator named Siddu Nyamgouda belonged to the Indian National Congress (INC) and was elected from the Jamkhandi constituency in the recently held Assembly elections in the state.
The road accident occurred when he was travelling from the Goa airport to Bagalkot area in Karnataka. The accident occurred when the driver tried to swerve the vehicle to avoid a heavy vehicle coming from the opposite direction and hit a road divider.
The legislator's car toppled as an impact of the accident. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared dead.
The INC had won 78 legislators in the just-concluded Assembly polls. The party formed an alliance government along with the Janata Dal (Secular) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). Nyamgouda was expected to be included in the state cabinet of ministers which is yet to be formally announced.
