NAIROBI, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- At least two people were killed and six others injured on Wednesday after a residential building collapsed in Nairobi's Pipeline area.
Pius Masai, National Disaster Management Unit (NDMU) Deputy Director and Communication Officer, confirmed the death toll, saying the injured have been rushed to hospital and that the rescue teams went to the site to carry out searches.
"It's unfortunate that two people have been confirmed dead and six injured and among them one is critical," Masai said.
He said the one-story temporary structure collapsed when it was being demolished by persons believed to have been hired by the owner. Masai said relevant agencies are investigating the incident.
Residents living in the area said the building had just one floor and that it had been marked for demolition. "Police have cordoned off the area amid rescue efforts," said one of the residents.
